The Problem with Dreaming...

Sojourning through this process we call life, I have several times paused to question my hope, aspiration and tenacity for dreaming- don't get me wrong: By dream, I do not mean the brief space of fantasy which grasp our subconscious immediately we fall asleep.

The dream I make mention of here is a long term goal, a passion, a value or an measurable target which is sparked and fueled by hope, determination and struggle. To many dream may come in varying forms measured only by the extent to which it is achieved. Depending on the context, a dream can transcend from the tinest measurable like being a super star to a more profound level like an African American occupying the most prestigious position of- President of the United States!

Until November 5th 2008, I have never bothered to ponder over the potency of Martin Lurther King Jnr's words, "I have a dream..." (don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the Dude, rather the cliche has become some sort of a platitude for every Tom, Dick and Harry that its meaning for me was almost lost). But after Obama's victory yesterday, something tingled inside me. A small sigh of hope, aspiration and respect- respect for that cliche.."I have a dream".

Like every coin with two sides, there is another side of dreaming...there is a tendency for complancency-to put it in simple terms- becoming Alice in Wonderland. People tend to focus on dreaming rather than looking for ways to achieving their dreams. Perhaps I may have fallen under that category until yesterday...but after that historical "change" me have got meself thinking.

True, Obama's win does not provide me my "daily bread" but it sure did give me some "food for thought". The old mate's clearly spelt out the recipe for achieving "dreams"- patience, hard work, determination, clarity, hope and above all- Faith! His faith on the American electorate was unparrallel. His campaign strategy clung on to those words "change"...with faith. And the electorate responded to that faith in "change" (in a rather overwhelming way-ask Macain)I haven't had a chance to read meself me bible these days but I still remember Jesus saying somewhere in that lovely book of wisdom..."with a faith as little as a mustard seed, you can move moutains...". I am not about to doubt that comment...as I lay me down to sleep (and dream on).
